What does the monument show?

The bronze sculpture was created by the local artist known as Buciños. The figure itself stands 1.85 metres tall on a rugged granite pedestal shaped like a natural rock, bringing the total height to nearly three metres. Castelao is depicted in a distinctive pose wearing his signature bow tie, with the folds of his coat billowing outward as if caught mid-gust of wind. Why was it built in Pontevedra?

This was the very first monument raised anywhere in Galicia in Castelao's honour. The project began with the association "Amigos da Cultura", which launched a public competition for the design in June 1982. Construction was funded through a popular subscription drive, and the finished statue was unveiled in 1983. Pontevedra was not chosen at random — Castelao had close ties to the city, having helped found the Museum of Pontevedra back in 1927.
