Maruševec Castle

Maruševec Castle is a historicist manor house set in the municipality of Maruševec, roughly fifteen kilometres from Varaždin in northern Croatia. Surrounded by a spacious park, it ranks among the most interesting noble residences of the Zagorje region and is a popular stop on any tour of the manor houses of Varaždin County.

What is the history behind the castle?

The earliest mentions of a residence on this site go back to the 14th century, though the building visitors see today took shape much later. As property of the Vragović noble family, it is documented from 1547, when it was still a wooden structure. Over the following centuries, facing the threat of Ottoman raids, it was rebuilt in stone as a proper fortification surrounded by a water-filled moat, meant to give the local population real protection.

By the mid-19th century the estate had changed hands several times before passing to Arthur Schlippenbach, who carried out the most extensive rebuild in 1877. He gave the castle its historicist character, added towers, and furnished the interiors in the fashionable style of the era. In 1883 the property was bought by Oskar de Pongratz, whose family acquired both Maruševec and the nearby Čalinec Castle. Under his ownership, around 1901, further — though comparatively minor — architectural changes were made.

The castle's silhouette still bears the clear marks of its late-19th-century remodelling: turrets, ornamented façades, and a layout typical of historicist residences of the period. A defining feature of the estate is its park, which took on its present form around 1884, when the whole complex was thoroughly renovated. The garden was laid out to a design by the Swedish architect Carl Gustav Swensson, following the English landscape-park tradition, with winding paths, mature trees, and viewpoints framing the castle. What remains today is only part of a much larger historical park, but it is enough to convey the atmosphere of a 19th-century noble estate.
