L'Aiguille

L'Aiguille is a scenic summit above Chamrousse, a favourite short hike in the Belledonne massif.

Standing at 1,839 m, right above the Col de l'Aiguille in the upper part of the Chamrousse ski resort in the Isère department, it's one of the resort's signature viewpoints — easy to reach in summer and popular with families who want a wide panorama without a long climb.

How do you get there?

The hike to L'Aiguille starts from the Chamrousse 1650 station, following a marked trail about 1.6 km long with 145 m of elevation gain — rated moderate and typically completed in around 47 minutes. In summer, an alternative is riding the Casserousse chairlift (a six-seater detachable lift built in 2016 to replace the older T-bar), which shortens the approach to near the summit itself. The trailhead sits within easy walking distance of central Chamrousse, so no car is needed beyond reaching the resort.

What will you see?

From the top, the view opens onto the Belledonne, Vercors and Chartreuse massifs — three of the ranges that frame Grenoble. Information panels at the summit explain the history of Grenoble and the local legend of the "beast of Grésivaudan." L'Aiguille also doubles as a paragliding take-off site, so watching pilots launch right next to the trail is a common part of the visit, especially on clear days. Those wanting a bit more can take a short side extension: roughly 15 minutes, with 40 m of ascent and 10 m of descent, leading to an additional viewpoint.

When should you visit?

The hiking season runs from 1 May to 30 November; outside those months the trail isn't maintained for walkers, and the exposed, largely shadeless terrain can be tougher going. In summer, sturdy footwear is worth packing given the steep sections and lack of shade. L'Aiguille is one of six family-friendly routes in the Chamrousse Hike Park, making it a good choice for a walk with children or as a warm-up before a longer outing in the Belledonne range.
