About this place
Košťálov is a small but ecologically significant nature monument on the southern slopes of Košťál hill (494 m above sea level), located in the municipality of Jenčice within the Litoměřice district. The site lies inside the České středohoří (Bohemian Midlands) Protected Landscape Area and covers just six hectares, making it one of the more compact protected sites in the region. It has held protected status since 1960, granted specifically to preserve its well-conserved mosaic of warm-loving plant communities.
What makes Košťálov special?
The southern and southeastern slopes of Košťál heat up intensely thanks to their sun exposure and rocky, calcareous bedrock, creating a microclimate that favors plant species more typical of warmer parts of Europe. This combination of aspect, slope gradient, and underlying geology has allowed species to survive here that have become increasingly rare elsewhere in the Czech Republic.
What plants grow here?
The reserve is known for its rich collection of protected steppe and xerothermic plant species. Among them are spring adonis (Adonis vernalis), recognizable by its bright yellow early-spring flowers, the beardless iris (Iris aphylla), the Bohemian subspecies of the meadow pasque flower (Pulsatilla pratensis subsp. bohemica), yellow alyssum (Aurinia saxatilis), and the compact grape hyacinth (Muscari tenuiflorum). This diversity gives the site considerable importance for the conservation of the Czech Republic's native steppe flora.
Is the site important for insects too?
Very much so. An entomological survey conducted in 1992 recorded an impressive 606 butterfly species within this small area — a remarkable number for a site of only six hectares. This points to an exceptionally healthy habitat and an abundance of host plants necessary for the development of caterpillars across many species.
What else is worth seeing nearby?
Košťál hill, on whose slopes the nature monument lies, is crowned by the ruins of the medieval Košťálov Castle. The ruins serve as a natural landmark and a popular destination for visitors exploring the area, combining natural and historical interest and making the hill an appealing stop along hiking routes through the Bohemian Midlands.
