About this place
Hradišťanská louka is a small but remarkable nature reserve sitting on the summit plateau of the Hradišťany hill (752 m above sea level), roughly 2.5 km northeast of the village of Červený Újezd, within the Hrobčice municipality in the Teplice District. The reserve lies inside the Czech Central Highlands (České středohoří) Protected Landscape Area and combines both natural and archaeological significance in one compact site.
Why was this reserve established?
The reserve was declared back in 1952 for two main reasons. The first was to protect a dry sub-mountain meadow that, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, was locally known as the "orchid meadow" thanks to the many wild orchid species that once grew here. Although the orchids themselves have largely disappeared over the following decades, the meadow still preserves a valuable plant community, home to species such as martagon lily and other rare grassland plants typical of dry, sun-exposed sites on basalt-derived soils.
What makes it archaeologically important?
The second, equally significant reason for protecting the area is the survival of the remains of a Knovíz culture hillfort, dating from the late Bronze Age to the early Iron Age (roughly 1300–800 BC). On the grassy summit plateau of Hradišťany, a clearly visible oval double stone rampart built from basalt boulders has survived, in places reaching up to two meters in height. It is one of the better-preserved traces of prehistoric fortified settlement in this part of the Czech Central Highlands — walking along the rampart today gives a tangible sense of how a defensive settlement here might have looked three thousand years ago.
What does the surrounding landscape look like?
Hradišťany hill is part of the volcanic hill chain characteristic of the Czech Central Highlands, easily recognizable from a distance thanks to its steep, forested slopes and open, grassy summit. From the top, visitors get wide views over the surrounding hills and valleys of the region, making the reserve an appealing destination for anyone who enjoys combining scenic views with natural and historical interest in a single short walk.
Is it worth visiting?
Hradišťanská louka is best suited to visitors who enjoy quiet, low-key outings and value the combination of nature and history over developed tourist infrastructure. There are no lookout towers or extensive information panels here — just a patch of largely untouched countryside where you can quietly observe the traces of ancient settlement while walking through a protected meadow. For anyone interested in archaeology or in the flora of sub-mountain grasslands, it is one of the more rewarding, if still relatively little-known, spots on the map of the Czech Central Highlands.
