About this place
Serra do Pilar Monastery is a former Augustinian monastery on a hill in Vila Nova de Gaia, on the south bank of the Douro, facing Porto. Its defining feature is a circular church and cloister, a rarity in Portuguese religious architecture. The complex is regarded as one of the finest examples of Renaissance and Mannerist architecture in the country.
What makes Serra do Pilar special?
The geometry. Both the church and the cloister around it are built on a circular plan. The church interior is covered by a hemispherical dome, with a narrow balcony running along its full circumference. The church is often compared to the Roman church of Santa Maria Rotonda, better known as the Pantheon. It was inaugurated in 1672.
What is the monastery's history?
Construction began in 1537 and took roughly 72 years. Lack of funds and political turmoil slowed it, at a time when Portugal was under Spanish rule. The monastery belonged to the Order of Saint Augustine.
The hill above the river held real strategic value, so the site soon took on a military role. During the Peninsular War (1807-1814) it was requisitioned by the future Duke of Wellington. In 1832, during the Siege of Porto, the monastery was turned into an improvised fort. In the early 20th century it housed barracks, and it remains under military care, linked to the Serra do Pilar Artillery Regiment.
What is its heritage status?
The monastery was classified a National Monument of Portugal in 1910. In 1996 it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing as part of the Historic Centre of Porto.
What can you see, and where is the best view?
Two spaces are open to visitors: the church and the cloister. Many people come mainly for the panorama, though. From the forecourt you can see Porto, the Douro and the bridges linking the two banks. The hill also looks striking in the evening, when the building is lit.
Is the monastery open?
Visiting hours have been listed as Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00-17:30. However, the official Portuguese heritage site reports a temporary closure for renovation work. Check the current status on the Património Cultural website before you go. The view from the forecourt does not depend on access to the interior.
