About this place
Cemitério da Lapa in Porto is a historic burial ground beside the church of Nossa Senhora da Lapa, described as Portugal's oldest Romantic-style cemetery. It works as a quiet pause in the city and as an open-air gallery of 19th- and 20th-century funerary art.
Why was a cemetery built at Lapa?
The story starts in 1833. After the Siege of Porto, and with cholera spreading, the city's burial grounds were running out of room. King Pedro IV authorised a new cemetery next to the Lapa church. It is tied to the Irmandade de Nossa Senhora da Lapa, the confraternity that also looks after the neighbouring church.
What makes it special?
The church and cemetery of Nossa Senhora da Lapa were classified as a monument of public interest by Portaria 222/2013, with a protection zone around them. In 2022 the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe (ASCE) recognised the site as a monumental cemetery.
Inside you will find family chapel-tombs, sculpture and richly decorated headstones. One burial chapel holds paintings by Silvestro Silvestri that have been the subject of a scholarly paper, so it rewards anyone interested in funerary architecture.
Who is buried here?
Among those laid to rest are the novelist Camilo Castelo Branco and the architect Marques da Silva, who designed several of Porto's best-known buildings. Their graves draw visitors with an interest in literature and architecture.
What about the church next door?
The confraternity was founded by Father Ângelo Sequeira. A first chapel went up in 1755, funded by donations, and work on a larger church began in 1756. Construction dragged on because of money shortages and the Napoleonic invasions, and by one guide's account continued until 1863. Sources disagree on some dates, so treat them as approximate.
How should you visit?
The cemetery remains a place of remembrance, so keep quiet and dress modestly. The city has run guided visit programmes that explain the families and the symbolism of the tombs. Check opening hours and entry rules with the confraternity or Porto's events calendar before you go.
