Kibička

Lhotka nad Labem, Czechia

About this place

Kibička is a small but distinctive peak in the Bohemian Central Uplands (České středohoří), located within the municipality of Lhotka nad Labem in the Litoměřice district of the Czech Republic. Rising to roughly 489 metres above sea level, it forms the lower, secondary summit of the Lovoš massif and is therefore sometimes referred to as Malý Lovoš, or Little Lovoš. It isn't usually a destination in its own right, but for anyone climbing Lovoš it makes a worthwhile short detour along the way.

How did Kibička form, and what is it made of?

Kibička is a remnant of the Tertiary volcanic activity that shaped the entire Bohemian Central Uplands. The summit is built from phonolite, a hard, column-jointed volcanic rock that resisted erosion far better than the softer sediments around it, leaving behind tower-like rock outcrops that still rise above the surrounding terrain. The nearby Panenské kameny, a group of three tower-shaped rock formations made of the same phonolite, share this geological origin and sit only a few hundred metres away.

What can you see from the summit?

Views from Kibička are more limited than from the taller, neighbouring Lovoš, since denser vegetation and the lower elevation restrict the panorama. Even so, from the exposed rocky sections you can pick out parts of Žernosecké jezero, a lake on the Elbe (Labe) river, as well as the town of Lovosice at the foot of the massif. It's a good spot for a short break on the way to the main summit.

How do you get to Kibička?

The peak sits right next to Lovoš (573 m), separated by only about 0.6 km as the crow flies. A marked educational trail (naučná stezka) runs across the saddle connecting the two summits, and most hikers approaching Lovoš from Lovosice or Velemín pass through here. The climb requires no special equipment or preparation — it's a straightforward hike along the well-marked paths typical of the Bohemian Central Uplands.

Is Kibička within a protected area?

Yes. The area around Lovoš and Kibička is protected as a nature reserve, extending over land belonging to the municipalities of Velemín and Lhotka nad Labem. The rocky, sun-exposed slopes support vegetation typical of the region's dry volcanic hills, making the site ecologically valuable despite the modest height of the peak itself.

Frequently asked questions

How high is Kibička? Around 489 metres above sea level (some sources list it between 488 and 490 m).

Is Kibička a standalone hiking destination? It's usually visited as part of a climb up the neighbouring, taller Lovoš — a short trail connects the two summits.

How does Kibička differ from Lovoš? Kibička is lower (489 m versus 573 m) and offers more limited views, but shares the same volcanic, phonolite-based geology.

Are there other interesting rock formations nearby? Yes — about 200 m away stand the Panenské kameny, three tower-shaped rock formations made of the same phonolite.
