Igreja de São Pedro de Ferreira

Ferreira, Portugal

About this place

Igreja de São Pedro de Ferreira is a Romanesque monastery church in the village of Ferreira, in the municipality of Paços de Ferreira, Porto District, northern Portugal. It holds the status of National Monument and is the main heritage landmark of the area. It ranks among the best-kept Romanesque buildings in Portugal and is part of the Rota do Românico route.

Why visit?

The church belongs to the transitional phase in which Romanesque solidity begins to meet early Gothic ideas. For anyone interested in medieval architecture, it shows how building style changed in Portugal between two eras. It stands in a quiet rural setting, far from the crowds of Porto.

What does the facade look like?

The most striking feature is the Romanesque portal, which projects forward from the rest of the front wall. It is made of five archivolts set one behind another, receding into the wall. The outermost archivolt has a double lobed outline, is pierced openwork, and is framed by a frieze of fine geometric carving. The other arches rest on four pairs of slender columns with carved capitals, each decorated with a different theme, well worth a close look.

History of the monastery

The origins of the foundation are not fully explained. The monastery is known to have existed before 1182, and its roots may go back much further, to the 10th century, since it is mentioned in the will of Mumadona Dias dated 959.

It once belonged to the Knights Templar. Augustinian canons regular had settled here from 1282, and the Templar order was dissolved in 1312. The canons left in 1475, when the monastery was attached to the bishopric of Porto. Bishop Dom João de Azevedo then established a collegiate church at Ferreira.

Restoration

In the mid-20th century the national directorate for buildings and monuments (D.G.E.M.N.) restored the church's medieval character, removing the stucco and woodwork that had hidden the original stone architecture.
