About this place
Igreja de São Mamede de Vila Verde is a small medieval church standing on a rise above the village of Vila Verde, in the municipality of Felgueiras, northern Portugal. It is one of the stops on the Rota do Românico, the Romanesque heritage trail through the Sousa and Tâmega valleys. It suits travellers who prefer quiet, modest monuments over crowded sights.
What is it and where does it come from?
The earliest known record of the parish is in the royal Inquirições of 1220, when the church fell under the patronage of the Pombeiro monastery, an important Benedictine house in the area. The building you see now is a later reconstruction, usually dated to the 14th century. Its builders still relied on Romanesque methods and proportions, even though Gothic had long dominated elsewhere. The result is a plain, sturdy rural church typical of this region.
What will you see?
- A single-nave building. A rectangular nave is joined by a lower, narrower rectangular chancel.
- Traces of wall paintings. The chancel keeps fragments of 16th-century murals, with plant and geometric motifs and figures identified as Saint Benedict and probably Saint Bernard, a nod to the parish's Benedictine ties.
- Valley views. The hilltop setting is part of the appeal.
What happened to it later?
A new parish church was built in the village in the 19th century, and the old one fell out of regular use. It was restored under the Rota do Românico project, and in 2017 the Bishop of Porto rededicated its altar, so the church is again used for worship.
How to get there and when to go
The address is Rua de S. Mamede, Vila Verde, Felgueiras. A car is the practical option, since Felgueiras lies inland in the Porto district and village bus links are limited. Check opening hours with the trail's contact line (+351 255 810 706), as monuments on the route keep their own schedules. Visit in good daylight to see the interior and the surroundings, and combine it with other Rota do Românico sites in Felgueiras.

Are there two churches in Vila Verde? Yes: the old church described here and the newer 19th-century parish church. The trail monument is the older one.
How long should I allow? About half an hour for the exterior, interior and view.
Where can I ask about opening times? By phone on the Rota do Românico line: +351 255 810 706.
