About this place
The Monastery of Santa Maria de Pombeiro stands in the parish of Pombeiro de Ribavizela, in the municipality of Felgueiras, northern Portugal. A former Benedictine abbey with a Romanesque church, it is part of the Rota do Românico, the Romanesque Route through the Sousa, Douro and Tâmega valleys, and has been a national monument since 1910.
What is the Pombeiro monastery?
It ranked among the major Benedictine houses between the Douro and Minho rivers. The oldest firm record dates to 1099 and mentions a monastic community on the site. The founders are usually named as Gomes Echiegues and his wife Gontroda, who made a donation around 1102. The medieval peak is tied to Abbot Rodrigo, who led the house from 1252 to 1276.
What will you see?
The church dates from the 12th and 13th centuries and has three naves. The semicircular apses that survive are typical Romanesque work. The main portal draws the most attention: its capitals, carved with plant motifs, count among the finest Romanesque sculpture in the region. A rose window crowns the façade, flanked by two bell towers.
Inside, later centuries have left their mark. Wall paintings were added around 1500 to 1530. After the severe damage of the 16th century the monastery joined the Benedictine Congregation in 1569, and the main chapel and altarpiece were rebuilt in 1770-1773. That is why a Romanesque structure holds gilded Baroque woodcarving, statues and paintings. The cloister was remodelled in neoclassical style in the early 19th century.
Has it been restored?
Yes. Conservation campaigns ran from 1958 to 1987 and again from 1993 to 2006. The church is open to visitors today, and guided visits typically take about an hour, covering the interior and the portal.
How do you plan a visit?
Pombeiro lies near Felgueiras in the Porto district, so it works well as part of a day trip by car around the region's Romanesque landmarks. Pair it with other stops on the Rota do Românico. Check opening hours and ticket prices on the route's website before travelling, as they can change.
