Igreja de Santa Maria de Airães

Felgueiras, Portugal

About this place

Igreja de Santa Maria de Airães is a Romanesque church in the municipality of Felgueiras, Porto District, in northern Portugal. It is one of the monuments on the Rota do Românico, the Route of the Romanesque in the Sousa Valley, and has held National Monument status since 1977.

What is this church and why does it matter?

A church at Airães is documented as early as 1091, so worship on this spot goes back to the 11th century. The building you see now is later. Scholars place it at the end of the 13th century or the start of the 14th, based on the late look of the main portal capitals and of the mouldings and capitals in the chancel. Two parts of the original structure survive: the apse and the central section of the main façade. The first church had a single nave; today there are three, the result of later alterations.

Who controlled the church?

Patronage changed hands several times. By 1394 the church belonged to the Crown and was linked to the Order of Aviz, and in 1517 it became a commandery of the Order of Christ. A record from 1726 mentions an inscription dated 1184 near the pulpit, which has since vanished.

What can you see?

  • the Romanesque apse with its moulded details
  • the central façade and portal, whose capitals show the late phase of the style
  • a three-nave interior shaped by later enlargements
  • painted wooden panels, the subject of a 2019 master's dissertation

The church is small, so a visit is short. It pairs well with other monuments on the route around Felgueiras.

How do you visit?

The Rota do Românico lists interior visits by appointment, with set times on certain days. Contact +351 255 810 706 or [email protected]. The feast day is 15 August. The monument is not accessible to visitors with reduced mobility. Book ahead if you want to go inside; the exterior and façade can be viewed at any time.

When should you go?

Any season works for the exterior, and daylight brings out the stonework. For the interior, arrange a time with the route organisers. On 15 August you can see the church during its local feast.
