Großer Osser

Lam, Czechia

About this place

Großer Osser is the highest peak of the Kunisch Mountains, rising right on the German-Czech border above the town of Lam. At roughly 1,293 metres, it's one of the most recognisable summits of the Bavarian Forest and a favourite hiking destination on both sides of the frontier.

Where is Großer Osser located?

The mountain sits at the meeting point of the Bavarian Forest (Bayerischer Wald) and the Bohemian Forest (Šumava), straddling the border between the German state of Bavaria and the Czech Plzeň Region. Together with its smaller neighbour, Kleiner Osser, it forms a twin-peaked massif that's visible from a considerable distance. On the German side, the closest base for a visit is Lam, a small market town in the Cham district that sits almost directly at the mountain's foot.

How do you get to the top?

Several marked hiking trails lead up Großer Osser, starting either from Lam itself or from nearby settlements on the German side of the border. Hikers who'd rather skip the full ascent from the valley can take the chairlift that operates near Lam, which cuts the climb dramatically and gets visitors close to the summit without a multi-hour walk; in summer the same lift infrastructure is also used by mountain bikers and downhill riders. The final stretch of trail to the top tends to be rockier than the lower sections, so sturdy footwear is worth having.

What will you see at the summit?

The summit of Großer Osser is one of the best viewpoints in this part of the Bavarian Forest. On a clear day the panorama takes in both sides of the range: to the east, the rolling ridgelines of the Bohemian Forest (Šumava) stretch into Czech territory, while to the west further Bavarian Forest peaks come into view. A lookout point at the top helps visitors orient themselves and pick out neighbouring summits. Because the state border runs directly across the massif, a walk along the ridge effectively takes you through two countries without any border formalities.

When is the best time to visit?

May through October is the most reliable window, when trails are fully open and views are at their widest. Spring and autumn tend to bring quieter trails, which makes for a more relaxed walk. In winter, the Lam area around Großer Osser turns into a small winter sports hub — ski runs open up, and the same lift used by summer hikers switches over to serving skiers and snowboarders.
