About this place

Estação Arqueológica de São Gens – an archaeological site in Celorico da Beira

Estação Arqueológica de São Gens is an archaeological site about 2 km north of the town of Celorico da Beira, in the Santa Maria parish of the Guarda district in central Portugal. It covers roughly 30 hectares and brings together traces from several periods: a Roman rural dwelling and an early medieval settlement with a necropolis cut into the bedrock.

What kind of place is it?

São Gens suits visitors interested in archaeology and the early medieval history of the Iberian Peninsula. It is not a developed park with tourist facilities but a site of scientific research, where the past is read from remains in the landscape.

Which periods are represented?

The Roman period

Excavations discussed in a 2011 master's thesis from the University of Coimbra point to a Roman rural habitat. Finds reported include an inscription dedicated to Jupiter and the head of a statue.

The early Middle Ages

The early medieval phase is the best documented. The settlement sat inside an oval enclosure defined by a stone wall and topped by a timber palisade. Researchers describe the local necropolis as the largest group of rock-cut graves in the region, with more than 54 scattered tombs.

Excavations ran in four campaigns between 2008 and 2013. They produced pottery, animal bones, iron objects and stone tools, along with the remains of houses. From this evidence, archaeologists infer a small community of four to six families who buried their dead in the nearby necropolis. The settlement was abandoned in the second half of the 10th century after a destructive fire.

Protection status

In 2015 a notice in the Diário da República announced the opening of a procedure to classify São Gens as an archaeological station and to set a provisional special protection zone. The proposal came from the regional culture directorate for the Centro region.
