Câmara Municipal de Trancoso

Trancoso, Portugal

About this place

Câmara Municipal de Trancoso, also known as the Paços do Concelho, is the town hall of Trancoso, a small town in Guarda District in north-eastern Portugal. The building dates from the early twentieth century: construction began in 1916 and it opened in 1917. Trancoso is one of the twelve Historic Villages of Portugal, and the town hall makes an easy landmark to pass while exploring it.

What kind of building is it?

The Paços do Concelho mixes Romanesque and neoclassical elements, with a timber structure inside. It went more than a century without a major overhaul, and its structure, roof and window frames developed numerous problems. Upstairs is the Salão Nobre, the ceremonial hall with its notable ceiling.

What is happening to it now?

The municipality commissioned a rehabilitation worth about 1.2 million euros, with roughly half (around 673,000 euros) co-funded by the national directorate for local authorities. The plan strips out almost the whole interior while keeping the original layout, the facade and the Salão Nobre ceiling. The works were scheduled for 18 months, and municipal services moved to the Clube Trancosense building meanwhile. The aims are better safety, working conditions, air conditioning, ventilation and energy efficiency. Some nearby streets may have traffic restrictions, so check the current situation before you visit.

Can you go inside?

It is a working administrative building, not a museum. There is no regular visiting programme, and the interior is closed during the works. Seeing it from the outside on the way to the main sights is the realistic plan.

What else is there to see in Trancoso?

  • Castle and town walls: they ring the historic centre with 15 towers and half-towers, four gates and three posterns, and are the oldest and most important monuments in the municipality.
  • Pelourinho: a Manueline pillory dating from the town's new charter (foral), declared a national monument in 1910.
  • Historic zone: the old town, for which a protection procedure was opened in 2021.

When to go and how to get there

Trancoso is in Guarda District and is easiest to reach by car. A walk through the centre takes a few hours and works in any season. Spring and early autumn offer the mildest weather for the walls and lanes.
