About this place
Castle of Sernancelhe (Castelo de Sernancelhe) is a medieval fortress in northern Portugal, in the municipality of Sernancelhe, district of Viseu. It lies within the civil parish of Sernancelhe e Sarzeda, at roughly 40.90 N, 7.49 W. For travellers crossing the Douro region and the area around the Serra da Lapa, it is a stop that shows how frontier defence worked during the Reconquista.
Where is the castle and why was it built there?
The castle stands at the southern edge of the Douro region, close to the Serra da Lapa. An old route linking Guarda and Lamego ran nearby, and the fortress watched over the land along the Távora river. The site was chosen deliberately: high ground offered views over the surroundings and control of the road, while difficult access helped defenders.
How old is the site?
Human settlement here goes back to the Neolithic, and the area was later Romanised. The earliest record of a fortification at Sernancelhe dates to 960. Late in the 10th century the stronghold was taken by Almanzor, the Muslim commander. Christians recovered it in 1055, when Ferdinand I of León drove the Moors from the region.
Who built the current castle?
The present medieval structure, built of granite, dates to the 12th or 13th century. It is attributed to the knights of the Order of the Hospitallers. Building castles in places like this was part of organising the territory after it was taken back from Muslim rule.
What does the castle look like?
It is a so-called rock castle (castelo roqueiro): a building adapted to the terrain, set on a high hill that is hard to reach. Its plan is irregular and roughly circular. Only part of the ring of defensive walls survives, and in that section stands the Porta do Sol, or Sun Gate, topped by a round arch.
