Tower of Ferreira de Aves

Sátão, Portugal

About this place

Tower of Ferreira de Aves – a medieval tower in Sátão municipality

The Tower of Ferreira de Aves (Portuguese: Torre de Ferreira de Aves, also called Castelo de Ferreira de Aves) is a medieval fortification in the parish of Ferreira de Aves, in the municipality of Sátão, Viseu District, central Portugal. It is a compact stone stronghold and one of the more interesting historic monuments in this part of the Beira region.

What does the tower look like?

The structure has a square plan and stands roughly 9 metres tall. Inside it is divided into two floors. The walls are massive, pierced by few openings and almost free of ornament, which reflects the purely defensive purpose of the building. The exception is a set of slender, paired Gothic window slits cut into the walls, the most decorative feature of the whole structure. A moat surrounds the tower, part of its former defensive system.

What is its history?

The settlement's story reaches back to the earliest days of the Portuguese kingdom. Ferreira de Aves received its foral (municipal charter) in the 1110s from Afonso Henriques, Portugal's first king. In 1126, Paio Fernandes Pires, founder of the Pacheco family, signed a contract with the town, making his family the first lordly dynasty of the area.

In 1156, half of the town belonged to the Knights Templar. In August 1451, under a deed of donation from King Afonso V, Martim Afonso de Melo obtained the lordly title of Ferreira. Between the late 15th and early 16th centuries the domain was raised to a marquisate, with Rodrigo de Melo as its titleholder.

Heritage protection

The monument is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público (Property of Public Interest). The decree granting protection was published on 21 December 1974.

Location and what to see nearby

The tower stands in the centre of Ferreira de Aves, in Sátão municipality, in the Viseu region, known for Dão vineyards, granite villages and quiet rural scenery. Its coordinates are about 40.7986 N, 7.6897 W. A visit is short, so it pairs well with a wider tour of Sátão and the nearby city of Viseu, home to a Gothic cathedral and the Grão Vasco Museum.
