Solar do Vinho do Dão, pórtico, edifícios anexos e jardins, antigo Paço Episcopal
About this place
Solar do Vinho do Dão in Viseu is a former episcopal palace that has served as the home of the Dão wine region's governing body since 2004. The complex includes the main building, a monumental portico, annex buildings and gardens, and sits beside the Mata do Fontelo municipal park on the edge of the city centre.
What is the Solar do Vinho do Dão?
It is a group of historic buildings in Viseu, central Portugal. It was formerly known as the Paço Episcopal do Fontelo, the palace of the bishops of Viseu. Today it houses the Comissão Vitivinícola Regional do Dão, the body responsible for the wines of the Dão region, and it is a place tied to promoting local wine culture.
What is the history of the site?
The story goes back to the 12th century. In 1122 Bishop Odório received the Fontelo estate as a donation from Maria Seseriquiz. Construction of the palace began in 1399 under Bishop João Homem. In the 16th century the property was linked to Bishop Miguel da Silva, who brought the Italian architect Francesco Cremona to Viseu. Cremona carried out important works on the palace, bringing Renaissance influence to it.
Until the 19th century the residence served the bishops as a holiday retreat. Its role then changed several times: it was a hospice and a military prison, and in the 1970s it sheltered families returning from the former Portuguese colonies. In 2004 it opened in its new role as the Solar do Vinho do Dão.
What is there to see?
The monument's official name lists the three parts that make up the whole: the portico, the annex buildings and the gardens. The portico gives the entrance a stately character, the buildings recall the site's past as a bishop's residence, and the gardens offer a quiet pause during a day in the city. Its position next to the Mata do Fontelo makes it easy to combine a visit with a walk in green surroundings.
Why does it matter for Portugal's wine map?
Dão is one of the country's best-known wine regions, and the Solar acts as its showcase. The monument therefore has a double significance: it is a witness to the ecclesiastical history and architecture of Viseu, and a living place where Dão wine is presented to visitors. The site also hosts wine-related events, including seasonal festivities.
