About this place
Castle of Folgosinho (Castelo de Folgosinho)
The Castle of Folgosinho is a small fortress in the mountain village of Folgosinho, in the municipality of Gouveia, Guarda district, in central Portugal. It overlooks the Mondego valley and is one of the most recognisable landmarks of the area, at the foot of the Serra da Estrela.
How old is the Castle of Folgosinho?
The original fortification was most likely built in the 12th century, under King Sancho I, on the ruins of a Lusitanian castro, a fortified settlement from pre-Roman times. Its job was to guard access to the upper Mondego region. Folgosinho was part of a defensive triangle in the river valley, together with the castles of Linhares and Celorico da Beira.
What visitors see today is much younger. In the first half of the 20th century the parish council of Folgosinho took the initiative to rebuild it, and the work is dated to 1938. The result is a revivalist castle that echoes the medieval fortification, some traces of which survive.
What does it look like?
The castle has a circular plan and is only about 10 metres in diameter, so it feels more like a tower than a sprawling stronghold. It is built of pale, rosy-white quartz, which makes it stand out against the mountain landscape. Its hilltop position lets it dominate the Mondego valley.
The legend of Viriathus
The origins of the castle are poorly documented. Popular tradition links its foundation to the time of Viriathus, the Lusitanian leader who fought the Romans and who, according to local belief, was born in Folgosinho. This is best read as legend rather than established history, but it adds local colour to the visit.
