Chapel of Saint Michael

Chvalíkovice, Czechia

About this place

St. Michael's Chapel stands in the middle of Chvalíkovice, a village south of Opava in the Moravian-Silesian Region, close to Hradec nad Moravicí.

How do you get to the chapel in Chvalíkovice?

Chvalíkovice sits just south of Opava, right next to Hradec nad Moravicí, so the easiest way in is by car or bike along the roads connecting the two towns. The chapel occupies the village's central spot, standing on the widened stretch of the main street that forms a small village square, so it comes into view as soon as you reach the built-up part of the village. Chvalíkovice is small enough that no further directions are needed — just head toward the middle of the settlement.

What is the history behind the chapel?

The chapel was built in 1865, facing a small single-storey school that had been completed five years earlier, in 1860. Both buildings went up in the same central spot in the village, on a section of the street that had been widened to create a square. It was consecrated to St. Michael the Archangel, with St. John the Baptist and St. Florian honored alongside him. It remains the only architecturally and historically significant building in Chvalíkovice; the rest of the settlement grew out of old farmsteads lined up on both sides of the street along a slope facing north, and the village only expanded beyond that original, compact layout in the 20th century, mostly in its second half.

What will you see on site?

In front of the chapel stands a memorial to the villagers who died in the First and Second World Wars. The chapel therefore serves a double purpose — a place of worship and a local site of remembrance, still marking the losses of a small community. Its form matches other modest mid-19th-century village chapels built as a settlement's focal point — no architectural grandeur, but a clear social role, since this is where the village's religious and patriotic life once centered.

When is the best time to visit?

Since the chapel stands in the open village square, it can be viewed from outside at any time of year — the season mainly affects the surroundings and how photos turn out, not access itself. It's worth pairing a visit with a stop in nearby Hradec nad Moravicí, since you'll already be in the area.
