About this place
Church of Saint Wenceslaus in Opava is the former church of a Dominican monastery, one of the city's oldest religious buildings, now serving as a cultural venue and art space.
How to get there?
The church stands in Opava's historic city center, on the grounds of the former Dominican monastery complex. Given its location right in the old town, it's easiest to reach on foot as part of a walk around Opava's other historic churches and landmarks. If driving, park at one of the central car parks and continue on foot.
What's the history behind it?
The church was founded by Duke Nicholas II of Opava. Construction, carried out as part of a Dominican monastery, took more than forty years, and the building itself was consecrated in 1336 by the Bishop of Olomouc, Jan VII Volek. At the time, it ranked as the second-largest church in medieval Opava, after the parish Church of Our Lady.
The building survived three fires. Following the last one, in 1735, it underwent a thorough Baroque remodeling. Work that intensified after 1732 replaced the original Gothic vaulting of the nave and presbytery with a Baroque barrel vault — which is why the interior today combines a medieval floor plan with Baroque decoration.
The church's fortunes changed at the end of the 18th century. The last mass was held here in 1786, after which the monastery and church were dissolved and the building was repurposed as a military warehouse. Its sacred function gave way to a utilitarian one for a long stretch of its history.
A new chapter opened with a conservation project carried out between 2005 and 2006. Restoration work on the church interior was completed in autumn 2006, and the restored building was formally reopened.
What will you see?
The church is a three-nave basilica with an elongated presbytery, a layout typical of large monastic churches of its era. Attached to its south side is the Chapel of St. Dominic, which preserves original frescoes from the mid-14th century — one of the oldest surviving groups of wall paintings in the region. Inside, the layered history of the building is easy to trace: a Gothic spatial plan combined with the Baroque vaulting added during the 18th-century reconstruction.
When should you visit?
The building is now cared for by a cultural institution operating under the name Dům umění (House of Art), run by OKO Opava, while the city of Opava owns the property. The church no longer serves regular liturgical functions — instead it hosts art exhibitions, concerts, cultural gatherings, and civil weddings. It's worth checking the current events schedule before visiting, since access to the interior depends on what's taking place there at the time. For anyone interested in sacred architecture or Opava's history, it's a worthwhile stop, especially combined with a walk through the nearby old town landmarks.
