About this place

Maletín Cemetery is a historic parish cemetery in the Czech village of Maletín, in the Šumperk district of the Olomouc Region. It surrounds the Church of Saint Nicholas and ranks among the oldest surviving features of a settlement whose roots reach back to the Middle Ages.

Where is it located?

Maletín lies in the Šumperk district, in the northern part of the Olomouc Region in Moravia. The village is made up of three parts — Javoří, Nový Maletín, and Starý Maletín — and the cemetery sits beside the parish church at the heart of the settlement. The first written record of Maletín dates back to 1317, making it one of the older settlements in the Šumperk area.

What can you see there?

The cemetery's most distinctive feature is a Calvary group — an Empire-style sculptural ensemble from 1848, created by the local stonemason L. Ch. Wanke. It depicts scenes tied to the Passion and serves as a visual and spiritual focal point within the grounds.

The cemetery is enclosed by a wall dating to the early 19th century, with access through two historic gates: the main gate, built in 1821, and an eastern gate added in 1845. Together with the wall, the gates form a coherent architectural ensemble typical of rural parish cemeteries in Moravia from that era.

The grounds also hold memorials connected to both World Wars, commemorating villagers who died in the conflicts of the 20th century. Modest monuments of this kind are common in rural cemeteries across the region and reflect the local community's own history.

The Church of Saint Nicholas

The cemetery borders directly on the Church of Saint Nicholas, around which it grew over time. This layout — a church surrounded by a walled cemetery with gates and a Calvary shrine — is a typical example of Central European rural sacred architecture, where burial ground and place of worship formed a single spatial whole.

When to visit

Being an open-air site, the cemetery can be visited year-round, though spring and summer are the most rewarding seasons, when the greenery around the church and wall gives the place a quiet, picturesque character. In autumn, around All Souls' Day, the cemetery takes on particular significance for the local community, who come to tend graves and light candles for their relatives.
