Câmara Municipal de Cantanhede / Antigo Paço dos Condes de Cantanhede e Marqueses de Marialva
About this place
The Paços do Concelho in Cantanhede is a Renaissance palace that now serves as the town hall, on Praça Marquês de Marialva in the centre of this Bairrada town. Built by the Meneses family, it is also known as the Paço dos Condes de Cantanhede e Marqueses de Marialva. Its cloister-style courtyard is the reason to step inside.
What is this building, and who built it?
The palace began as the seat of the Meneses family, lords and later counts of Cantanhede. The main building campaign is probably linked to D. João de Meneses, the fifth holder of the title. The result is a large sixteenth-century-style complex built entirely of pale Ançã limestone, a stone prized by Coimbra sculptors. Its wings form a closed quadrangle around the courtyard.
How do the Marquises of Marialva fit in?
D. António Luís de Meneses received the title of Marquis of Marialva for his military service during the seventeenth-century Restoration War against Spain. The same family held the Cantanhede countship, which explains the building's double name. The sixth and last marquis, D. Pedro José Vito de Meneses, died in Paris in 1823, and the municipality marked the anniversary in 2023. The square in front of the building carries the family's name.
What will you see inside?
The courtyard is the highlight. The ground floor has a gallery of seven bays with ribbed vaults, corbels and Renaissance keystones. One keystone carries an inscription reading 1553, though some guides give 1533. Above it runs an Ionic colonnade, typical of the late-Renaissance Castilian school of Coimbra. The council uses the cloisters for exhibitions and events.
When can you visit?
This is a working administrative building, so you can walk in during office hours, Monday to Friday, roughly 8:45 am to 6 pm. Allow 15 to 30 minutes. At weekends and in the evening you can still admire the facade from the square.
What else is nearby?
The palace sits in the town centre, so everything is on foot. The Igreja Matriz de São Pedro, built in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and holding the tombs of the Meneses family, and the Convento de Santo António are close by. Cantanhede lies in the Bairrada wine region, known for sparkling wine and roast suckling pig (leitão), so lunch nearby is an easy plan.
