Câmara Municipal de Coimbra

Coimbra, Portugal

About this place

Câmara Municipal de Coimbra is the seat of Coimbra's city government, housed in the Paços do Concelho building on Praça 8 de Maio, at the administrative heart of the city. It makes an easy stop on a walk between the Baixa and the Santa Cruz monastery.

Where is Coimbra's town hall?

The building stands on Praça 8 de Maio, directly facing the Monastery of Santa Cruz. Its coordinates are roughly 40.2113 N, 8.4289 W. The square is the city's administrative centre and features on the Baixa Citadina walking route described by Visit Portugal. Most central sights in Coimbra are within easy walking distance.

What should you know about the building?

Paços do Concelho occupies part of the former Santa Cruz monastic complex. Over the centuries the monastery's grounds were enlarged through purchases of land from various owners, among them members of the Jewish community. Today the building works as a municipal office rather than a museum, so a visit is mostly an exterior look plus whatever public events are on.

The council has not always sat here. Historical research shows that Coimbra's municipal council met at several sites over time, including near the Sé cathedral and, in the 1370s, at the Torre de Almedina.

What is inside?

  • Sala da Cidade occupies the former monastic refectory. In 2022 it hosted the exhibition "Projetos para o Mosteiro", which explored possible future uses for the monastery.
  • The public service hall has had its ceiling conserved: lost plasterwork was repaired and the original paintings recovered.
  • The Átrio is the entrance hall, where official notices appear on electronic panels.

A rehabilitation project approved in 2016 also covered climate control, ventilation, lighting and window frames.

When should you go?

As this is a working municipal building, visit on a weekday during office hours. Check cm-coimbra.pt for current opening times and for exhibitions in the Sala da Cidade. The square outside is open at any hour.
