Campo Militar da Batalha do Buçaco

Mealhada, Portugal

About this place

Campo Militar da Batalha do Buçaco is the Peninsular War battlefield near Mealhada in central Portugal, where on 27 September 1810 Wellington's army halted the French advance led by Marshal Masséna. The site covers the Serra do Buçaco ridge and borders the historic Mata do Buçaco forest.

What happened here?

During the Napoleonic invasion of Portugal, the Anglo-Portuguese army took up position on the high Serra do Buçaco. Wellington kept his troops on the reverse slope, hidden from the French, who could not judge their numbers or layout. Masséna sent several assaults uphill and each one broke down. Casualty figures vary by source: roughly 1,250 to 1,350 killed or wounded on the Anglo-Portuguese side and about 2,500 to 4,500 on the French. Even so, Wellington then fell back toward the Lines of Torres Vedras after the French outflanked his positions.

What can you see today?

  • The battle monument. An obelisk dating from 1873 stands on the southern slopes of the range.
  • The Historical and Military Museum of the Peninsular War. It holds period artefacts, including cannon and relics linked to the campaign. The museum and monument belong to the Ministry of National Defence rather than the foundation that manages the forest.
  • Masséna's headquarters site. Military-history visitors often include this stop.
  • Mata do Buçaco. The surrounding forest is protected as a Property of Public Interest and makes a good setting for a walk across the hills where the fighting took place.

Is the battlefield officially protected?

In February 2017 the Centre Regional Directorate of Culture opened a procedure to classify the battlefield as a heritage site. The area spans the parishes of Luso (Mealhada), Trezói (Mortágua), and Carvalho and Sazes (Penacova). Check the DGPC's SIPA register for the current outcome.

How do you plan a visit?

Luso, in the municipality of Mealhada, is the natural base. The council promotes the area as a military tourism destination, so it makes sense to combine the museum, the monument and a forest walk in one trip. The battlefield is large and the sites are spread across the ridge, so a car and a map help.
