Burg Štrálek

Štrálek Castle is a medieval castle ruin on the edge of the Jiříkov municipality, in the Bruntál district of eastern Czechia, roughly 3 km south of the town of Rýmařov.

When was Štrálek Castle built?

The castle dates back to the mid-13th century, raised by the Benešovic family, a noble house established in the Moravian lands at the time. The earliest surviving record of its existence is a seal belonging to Beneš of Štítina, generally regarded as the castle's founder: by 1282 he was already using the title "of Strálek," which shows the stronghold was already up and running as a family seat by then.

What happened to the castle over the centuries?

The surrounding land turned out to be poor for farming, making the estate hard to sustain. As a result, the founder's son — also named Beneš — sold off the villages tied to the castle in 1349 and relocated to more fertile ground near Přerov. Three years later, in 1352, the castle itself was bought by the Moravian margrave John Henry, brother of Emperor Charles IV, reportedly drawn by the prospect of silver deposits in the surrounding hills.

Before that sale, though, the castle went through a rough patch: around 1320 it was captured under circumstances that remain unclear and partly burned. It kept limping along for a few more decades before being abandoned for good in the second half of the 14th century. No new owner ever stepped in to rebuild it, and it has stood as a ruin ever since.

What is left to see today?

Štrálek was built as a two-part castle, its main section and outer bailey separated by a moat cut straight into the bedrock — in places reaching up to twenty-seven meters across. That moat, along with surviving wall fragments and traces of the old structures, is the main thing visitors can still make out on site. There has been no reconstruction, so what greets visitors is a classic, partly overgrown ruin, much like many other medieval strongholds scattered across northern Moravia.

Archaeological finds recovered from the castle grounds are now held by the town museum in Rýmařov, where they can be viewed separately from a visit to the ruin itself.
