Bílé kameny

Jítrava, Czechia

About this place

Bílé kameny is a group of sandstone rock formations in the Lužické hory (Lusatian Mountains), located about one kilometer north of the village of Jítrava at the foot of Vysoká mountain, in the Liberec Region of northern Czechia. The site is also widely known as Sloní kameny, or Elephant Stones, a nickname inspired by the rounded shapes of the rocks, which from a distance resemble the backs of a resting herd of elephants.

How did these rocks form?

The formation owes its distinctive shape to tectonic movements along the Lusatian Fault. During the Tertiary period, these movements tilted and fractured light-colored sandstone beds dating to the Upper Cretaceous (Turonian), producing the rounded, massive blocks that rise to roughly 20 meters in height today. Weathering of the softer sandstone layers over time carved out oval hollows, small caves, and narrow rocky passages that visitors can walk through.

Why are the rocks so pale?

The name Bílé kameny, literally "White Stones," reflects the unusually light, almost white color of the sandstone here, which sets it apart from the typical sandstone found elsewhere in the region. This pale coloring comes from a high kaolin content within the rock. Combined with the smooth, rounded, elephant-like shapes, this striking whiteness is what gave rise to the popular alternative name Sloní kameny, or Elephant Stones.

Is the site protected?

Yes. Because of its exceptional geological value as a textbook example of weathering in Upper Cretaceous Turonian sandstone, Bílé kameny has been protected as a natural monument (přírodní památka) since 1955. The rocks lie within the Lužické hory Protected Landscape Area, meaning the surrounding countryside is subject to additional nature conservation rules as well.

How can visitors reach Bílé kameny?

A red-marked hiking trail passes directly by the rocks, and the site also forms part of an educational nature trail connecting the Lužické and Žitavské mountain ranges. This makes Bílé kameny easy to reach on foot from Jítrava and nearby villages throughout the year. While the area around the rocks is freely accessible, climbing directly onto the formations themselves is prohibited, a rule meant to protect both the fragile sandstone and visitors.
