About this place
Bedemgrad is a medieval fortified town on the slopes of Mount Krndija in Slavonia, eastern Croatia. Its ruins sit on a volcanic rock outcrop at roughly 407 metres above sea level, above the village of Gradac Našički near the town of Našice. It is also known locally as Gradina or the Našice ruin.
Where is Bedemgrad?
The site lies in Osijek-Baranja County, on the wooded Krndija massif. The village of Gradac Našički stands below it, along the D53 road between Našice and Slavonski Brod. Thanks to its position on a rocky height, the ruins offer wide views over the surrounding Slavonian countryside.
What is the history of Bedemgrad?
Traces from Roman times have been found on the hill, and it is thought that an old Roman road passed nearby, linking important settlements in Pannonia. The fortified town took its present form in the 14th century. Over time it was held by powerful noble families, including the Aba-Khan, Gorjanski and Iločki.
After the Ottomans arrived in 1541, Bedemgrad gradually fell into ruin and never regained its former role.
What can you see there?
The highlight is the massive entrance tower with arrow loops. Tourist descriptions call this feature unique in continental Croatia, and one blogger considers it among the oldest surviving examples of its type. Parts of the defensive walls also remain, along with traces of the moat that once surrounded the town.
Getting there and is it worth it?
Bedemgrad is a popular hiking destination. One described route is an out-and-back walk of about 8 km, rated moderate, taking roughly 2 to 2.5 hours. The area also has the Našice geological trail on Krndija, about 23 km long, which leads toward the fortress. It is being renovated, with information boards said to carry QR codes. The local hiking society Krndija from Našice organises group Sunday outings to Bedemgrad.
