Prandau-Normann Castle

Prandau-Normann Castle (also called Valpovo Castle) is a baroque palace standing in the centre of Valpovo, in eastern Croatian Slavonia. It now houses a regional museum and remains the town's most recognisable landmark.

How do you get to the castle?

Valpovo lies in eastern Croatia, in Osijek-Baranja County, not far from Osijek. The castle stands right in the town centre, so once you arrive in Valpovo no further transport is needed — it's a short walk from anywhere in the old town. Where does the castle's present shape come from?

The site's history goes back to the early 15th century, when Ban Ivan Morović built the Walpo fortress here. The fortification changed hands and function over the following centuries: during Ottoman rule it was reinforced, and its distinctive horseshoe-shaped, red-brick walls survived until 1687, when Austrian forces drove the Ottomans out of the town.

The real transformation from fortress into palace began with Baron Antun Petar Hilleprand von Prandau, who acquired the estate in 1721. He raised a monumental palace on the southern wing of the old fortress, crowned by a prominent 37-metre tower. Through this rebuilding and the expansion of the medieval fortifications, the castle took on, in the first half of the 18th century, a form close to what visitors see today.

The Prandau family held the estate for three generations. In 1885, through marriage, ownership passed to the Normann von Ehrenfels family — which is why the building carries both names to this day. After the Second World War, in 1945, the castle was nationalised, and since 1954 it has served as the seat of the Museum of the Valpovo Region. During the Croatian War of Independence the building suffered damage and later required repair work.
