Navas de Bureba traces its origins to the late 9th century, when Christian forces resettled La Bureba following the reconquest of nearby towns such as Poza de la Sal, Piedralta, Pancorbo, and Cerezo. The earliest written record of the settlement appears in a 1011 document from the Monastery of San Salvador de Oña. A century later, in 1111, Queen Urraca granted Navas to that same monastery, making its abbot the town's feudal lord; even so, the monks acted mainly as landowners, and Navas kept its own municipal governance as a royal villa. By the time of the 1787 Floridablanca census, it was recorded as a villa belonging to the Cuadrilla de la Vid, one of seven such groupings forming the Merindad de Bureba.
