Ždánov

Ostružno, Czechia

About this place

Ždánov is a forested peak in the Šumava mountains rising above the village of Ostružno, part of the Nezdice na Šumavě municipality in the Plzeň Region of western Czechia.

Where is Ždánov?

The peak reaches an elevation of 1064–1067 metres and sits roughly 3 km east of the small town of Kašperské Hory, within a range known as the Javornická hornatina, part of the wider Šumava massif. It neighbours the nearby summit of Javorník. A defining feature of Ždánov is its almost flat ridge, stretching for about 300 metres and covered in dense spruce-beech forest typical of this stretch of the Czech-Bavarian borderland.

At the foot of the mountain lies Ostružno, a small settlement counted among the more scenic spots of this part of Šumava, with views reaching deep into the surrounding region and its ranges and valleys.

How do you get to the summit?

The most convenient starting point is Kašperské Hory. A popular loop route leads via Hájenka Nebe — a former forester's lodge, the highest-lying building in the town, also known by its German name Himmelreich — then around the Chlum hill to the site of the former Ždánov settlement, and back to Kašperské Hory via Kavrlík. Along the way, the trail opens up views over the town itself and the surrounding Šumava peaks.

A nature trail called Strážců hranice (Border Guards Trail) runs along the mountain's slopes, recalling the history of border protection along the Czech-Bavarian frontier in this area. Two cycling routes also cross the area, while a red-marked hiking trail connects Ždánov with the neighbouring summits of Sedlo and Královský kámen, making it possible to plan a longer, multi-hour ridge hike through this part of Šumava.

What else is worth seeing nearby?

Ždánov itself has no lookout tower, but an excellent vantage point over this stretch of Šumava is the tower of Kašperk Castle. From its windows, at a height of about 30 metres, visitors can take in a panorama that includes numerous regional peaks — Ždánov among them, alongside Popelná, Huťská hora, Poledník and Pancíř.

The area's history reaches back to the Middle Ages: the site of the former Ždánov settlement was once linked to local ore mining, and the settlement itself belonged to the Žichovice estate of the Lamberk noble family. Today, mostly traces in the terrain remain, drawing visitors interested in the region's history.

When is the best time to visit?

The best window for hiking the Ždánov ridge runs from late spring through early autumn, when trails are dry and views are at their clearest. In winter the area is often covered in snow, which makes the approach harder but attracts fans of cross-country and touring skiing on the surrounding Šumava trails.
