Huťská hora

Rejštejn, Czechia

About this place

Huťská hora (1,187 m) is the highest point of the municipality of Rejštejn in the Bohemian Forest (Šumava), Czech Republic, rising within the Svojšská hornatina range inside Šumava National Park.

Where is Huťská hora?

The mountain sits on the northern edge of the Šumavské pláně plateau, roughly 4 km southeast of the village of Svojše and 3.5 km north of Horská Kvilda. Administratively it belongs to Rejštejn, whose highest elevation it forms, deep in the quiet Czech-Bavarian borderland.

How do you get to the top?

The rounded, gently sloping ridge of Huťská hora makes it an easy climb even for casual hikers. The most popular approach starts near the former settlement of Zhůří, following trails across open meadows and spruce forest typical of the Šumava plateau. Routes also lead in from Horská Kvilda and Svojše, both crossing the wet meadows and forest characteristic of the region.

What will you find at the summit?

The summit itself carries a military transmitter mast and a geodetic survey point, making it a recognizable landmark in this part of Šumava. The peak is forested and does not offer a wide panorama, but the open meadows nearby — especially around the vanished village of Zhůří — give sweeping views across the Šumavské pláně and the ridgelines along the Czech-Bavarian border. The mountain also carries a somber chapter of history: a passenger aircraft flying the Bucharest–Vienna–Prague–Paris route once crashed into its northeastern slope at about 1,080 m, killing all three people on board.

What other names does the mountain have?

Huťská hora is also known as Zhůřská hora, after the abandoned village of Zhůří at its foot, and was formerly called Věžná. Its German name, Haidl, reflects the long shared German-Czech history of this stretch of the Bohemian Forest.

When is the best time to visit?

Summer and early autumn, from June to October, are ideal, when the meadows around Zhůří are green and trails are dry and easy to follow. In winter, deep snow makes the area popular with cross-country skiers, though reaching the summit itself takes more experience and proper preparation.
