About this place
Svatobor is a forested hill rising above the town of Sušice on the eastern edge of the Šumava region in South Bohemia, Czech Republic. At 845 metres above sea level, it has long been a favourite destination for locals and visitors who want a wide Šumava panorama without a serious mountain hike.
How tall is Svatobor and what tower stands on top?
The summit reaches 845 m above sea level. A stone lookout tower crowns the hill, built in 1934 on the site of an earlier 1900 tower that had collapsed. The current structure stands 31.6 metres tall, with the viewing platform at 28 metres, reached by climbing 182 wooden steps.
What can you see from the Svatobor tower?
From the top platform, the view stretches across the Šumava foothills. On a clear day you can pick out the ruins of Rabí Castle, the peaks of Javorník and Boubín, Velký Javor across the border in Germany, and the town of Sušice sitting directly below the hill. On exceptionally clear days, even the Alps become visible on the horizon.
Why is Svatobor historically significant?
For the ancient Slavs, Svatobor was considered a sacred place — a grove believed to be the seat of pagan gods, framed by old oak trees. Archaeologists have found traces of primitive, partly sunken dwellings at the foot of the hill dating from the Mesolithic period, roughly 10,000 to 8,000 years ago. That makes Svatobor one of the oldest continuously significant sites in the Sušice area, long before any tower stood on it.
Is there anywhere to eat or stay overnight on Svatobor?
Yes. A mountain chalet, Chata Svatobor, operates year-round next to the tower and serves traditional Czech cuisine. It also offers 22 beds, so a trip up the hill can easily be stretched into an overnight stay or combined with a longer Šumava hike.
How do you get to Svatobor?
The hill sits very close to the centre of Sušice — the walk up from town typically takes about an hour along marked forest trails. That makes Svatobor a popular short afternoon outing, while also serving as a convenient starting point for longer Šumava hiking routes.
