Nuzerovská Stráž

Hartmanice, Czechia

About this place

Nuzerovská Stráž is a hill rising to 802 metres above sea level, the highest point of the small Stráže ridge in the Šumava foothills (Šumavské podhůří), in the Klatovy district near the town of Sušice. The surrounding area is loosely tied administratively to Hartmanice, even though the hill itself lies outside the boundaries of Šumava National Park, within the Švihovská vrchovina highlands.

Where exactly is Nuzerovská Stráž?

The hill belongs to the Stráže ridge, part of the wider Svatoborská vrchovina, which stretches roughly 30 km in length and 10–12 km in width south of Sušice. Nuzerovská Stráž is the highest summit of that ridge, with a topographic prominence of 144 metres. The small village of Loučová sits on its western slope, and the Volšovka stream — a left-bank tributary of the Otava river — runs nearby at the foot of the surrounding hills.

Where does the name come from?

The hill's name most likely derives from the nearby settlement of Nuzerov, today part of Sušice, first documented in 1353. Between 1880 and 1959 Nuzerov was administratively part of the municipality of Dolejší Krušec, which in turn belonged to the town of Hartmanice — the historical link between this area and Hartmanice, even though Nuzerovská Stráž itself lies closer to Sušice today. In the mid-19th century Nuzerov had over a hundred German-speaking inhabitants, with the Hasenöhrl, Pössl and Stingl families among the most common. The German population was expelled after 1945, and the village today has only a handful of permanent residents.

What nature is there to see?

The slopes of Nuzerovská Stráž are covered with meadows crossed by several clear streams. In spring, snowdrops and cowslips bloom here, making the area a popular destination for short nature walks in the Šumava foothills. Nearby stand two other summits of the same ridge, Vosík (873 m) and Borek (859 m), together forming a gentle, picturesque landscape typical of this foothill region.

Is it a popular hiking destination?

Nuzerovská Stráž appears on the "Nejhory Plzeňska" (highest peaks of the Pilsen Region) list maintained by the Vrcholovka.cz hiking portal, classified in its "gold" tier — reserved for peaks that are climbed less often and aimed at more dedicated hill-baggers. It is not a mass tourist destination the way the main Šumava ridges are, but rather a quiet target for visitors looking for uncrowded trails around Sušice.
