Torres Novas Castle
Torres Novas Castle (Castelo de Torres Novas) is a medieval fortress in the heart of the town of Torres Novas, in Portugal's Santarém District. It rises above the town and has long been its main landmark. The stronghold has Islamic origins, and its present form comes from later rebuilding under Portugal's Christian kings. It has been classed as a National Monument since 1910.
What does the castle look like?
The walls follow a Gothic, shield-shaped outline. Eleven prismatic towers reinforce the circuit, and rectangular merlons crown the walls. One tower on the north side, fitted with a postern gate, is often identified as the keep (torre de menagem), although in volume it differs little from the others. Inside the walls stands the former house of the alcaide, the castle's governor, and a well-kept garden fills the enclosure.
What is the history of the castle?
The original fortress was built in the Muslim period, probably in the 12th century. It stood on a strategic stretch of the Tagus valley and belonged to a defensive line that included the castles of Abrantes, Almourol, Belver and Torres Novas, meant to hold off Almohad attacks. The stronghold changed hands more than once. According to Portuguese official heritage sources, King Sancho I took it definitively in 1190, and he probably had it rebuilt in the late 12th century. Another major reconstruction followed in the 14th century under King Ferdinand I, after the wars with Castile.
