Edifício dos Paços do Concelho em Tomar

Tomar, Portugal

About this place

Edifício dos Paços do Concelho in Tomar is the town hall of Tomar, a city in central Portugal. It occupies the Praça da República, the main square of the historic centre, and has housed the municipal administration for centuries. Its origins go back to the early 1500s.

What is this building?

"Paços do Concelho" is the Portuguese term for a town hall. King Manuel I ordered the building as a royal palace. It was later handed over to the municipality and still serves as the seat of local government. It stands on the site of the former royal residence, facing the church of São João Baptista.

What does it look like?

The building is a rectangular, three-storey block under a hipped roof. Superimposed arcades structure the facade, which has three large arches and royal heraldry from the Manueline era. Although it dates from Manuel's reign, it shows none of the typical Manueline decoration. It was remodelled in the second half of the 16th century in a Mannerist style that replaced the earlier look. Heritage listings date the structure to the 16th-18th centuries.

Is it a protected monument?

Yes. Decree no. 37 077 of 1948 classified it as an Imóvel de Interesse Público, a property of public interest. In March 2026 the municipality put out a tender for works to improve the building's energy efficiency.

How do you get there and what is nearby?

The town hall sits in the heart of the old town on Praça da República, within walking distance of most central sights. The square makes a natural starting point for a stroll: the church of São João Baptista is right opposite, and streets lead from here to the rest of Tomar's landmarks. The interior is used for municipal work, so the building is best enjoyed from the square, where you can take in the whole facade.

When should you visit?

The facade can be viewed at any time of year. Daylight shows off the arcades and coats of arms best. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking around Tomar, without the summer heat.
