Cave of Aroeira

Torres Novas, Portugal

About this place

The Cave of Aroeira (Gruta da Aroeira) near Torres Novas is one of Portugal's key archaeological and paleoanthropological sites. It sits in the limestone uplands of Estremadura in central Portugal, and its fame rests on a skull of Homo heidelbergensis that is roughly 400,000 years old.

Where is the Cave of Aroeira?

The cave lies in the village of Almonda, within the civil parish of Zibreira, in the municipality of Torres Novas, Santarém district. Its coordinates are about 39.506° N, 8.616° W. The area belongs to the Estremadura Limestone Massif, a karst landscape of caves, sinkholes and underground passages.

What was found there?

Excavations in the cave produced stone tools from the Acheulean culture, one of the oldest stone-working traditions of the Lower Paleolithic. The standout find is a Homo heidelbergensis skull dated to around 400,000 years ago, catalogued as Aroeira 3. Its discovery was announced in spring 2017, and it is regarded as the earliest human trace in Portugal.

Why does it matter?

Homo heidelbergensis lived in Europe during the Middle Pleistocene, before Neanderthals emerged. The Aroeira skull gives researchers a direct look at the people who inhabited the far western edge of the continent. The Acheulean tools add detail about what these people used and how they lived in cave shelters. Together they give Portugal an unusually early chapter in the story of human settlement in Europe.

How do you get to Aroeira?

The easiest base is the town of Torres Novas, from which Almonda is a short drive of a few minutes by car. The region lies between Lisbon and Coimbra, so it fits naturally into a central Portugal road trip. Because the site is first of all a research location, ask the local tourist office in Torres Novas about current access before you set out.

What else is nearby?

The Estremadura limestone massif offers plenty of natural scenery: karst formations, valleys and walking paths. Torres Novas itself has a historic town centre, while villages such as Almonda show everyday rural life in the region. If prehistory is your interest, Aroeira is a good starting point for exploring other sites in this karst area.

When should you visit?

Spring and early autumn suit this region best, with comfortable walking temperatures and no summer heat. Central Portugal can get very hot in July and August, so plan outings for the morning.
