About this place
Vyrovna (Czech: Výrovna) is a 540-metre phonolite hill about 1 km west of the town of Jílové (Jílové u Děčína) in the Ústí nad Labem region, roughly 6.5 km southwest of Děčín. It's a modest but geologically interesting stop on the local trail network — more rewarding for nature and geology fans than for anyone chasing a dramatic panorama from a tall tower.
How do you get to Vyrovna?
The easiest approach is on foot from Jílové u Děčína, which sits right at the foot of the hill. A green-marked trail leads up from town and continues onward toward Děčínský Sněžník. The path runs through forest and isn't technically demanding, making it a pleasant half-day option without special preparation. Jílové itself is reachable by car or by train — the town has its own railway station, from which it's just a short walk to the base of the hill.
What is there to see?
Vyrovna's main appeal is geological. The hill is built of phonolite, a volcanic rock that formed when trachytic magma rose along a fault in the earth's crust, creating an underground body known as a laccolith. Later erosion stripped away the surrounding material and exposed this rock mass at the surface, giving the hill its present form.
The second reason Vyrovna shows up on nature maps is its steep, rocky north-facing slope, home to a rare stand of European yew (Taxus baccata) — a species now uncommon in Czech forests and under strict protection. Because of this occurrence, part of the slope has been declared a nature monument, and the site is known locally as one of the "Jílové yews" locations.
Nearby, in the Děčín Highlands, stands the well-known lookout tower on Děčínský Sněžník, the highest table mountain in the Czech Republic. The 33-metre structure offers views on clear days toward the Lusatian Mountains, Bohemian Switzerland, and Milešovka, and there's a small refreshment gazebo at its base to rest after the climb.
When is the best time to visit?
Spring and autumn are the most rewarding seasons, when the forest is open and temperatures suit longer walks. Summer brings welcome shade along the trail, while in winter the rocky sections of the slope can turn icy, so extra caution is worth taking near the rock outcrops where the yews grow.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a lookout tower on Vyrovna itself? No — Vyrovna is a wooded hill without its own viewing point. The nearby tower on Děčínský Sněžník is the area's main lookout attraction.
What makes this hill special? A rare stand of European yew growing on its rocky north slope, plus an unusual geological story: a phonolite laccolith exposed by erosion.
Is the route suitable for families with children? Yes, the walk up from Jílové isn't technically difficult, though care is needed on the rockier stretches of the slope.
How long does the hike take? A round trip from Jílové to the hill and back usually takes one to two hours; extending the walk toward Sněžník turns it into a half-day trip.
