Vodopád Jedlové

Josefův Důl, Czechia

About this place

Vodopád Jedlové is a small but scenic waterfall in the Jizera Mountains, within the municipality of Josefův Důl, close to the Czech-Polish border. Water tumbles over a granite slab roughly five metres high into a small stony pool below, and because of the vertical shape of the rock face, the falling stream forms a distinctive curved, parabola-like arc. The waterfall sits inside the Jedlový Důl nature reserve, a 12-hectare protected area stretching along the valley of the Jedlová stream between the Josefodolský and Mariánskohorský ridges.

How do you get to Vodopád Jedlové?

A blue-marked hiking trail leads to the waterfall, starting in the village of Josefův Důl and looping around the cascades. For visitors who want more than just a quick look at the falls, a two-kilometre nature trail has also been laid out through the narrow, picturesque valley of the Jedlová stream, with seven themed stops along the way covering the local nature and history. You can drive as far as Josefův Důl itself; from there the site is reached on foot along the marked path.

What will you see there?

The centrepiece is the waterfall itself — a cascade dropping over granite rock into a small pool ringed by stones. The scene changes noticeably with the seasons: in spring, when snowmelt from the higher slopes swells the stream, the flow is at its strongest and the waterfall looks its most dramatic. In summer and autumn the stream is often much thinner, though the surroundings still have their own charm — dense forest, moss-covered boulders and the quiet of the Jedlová valley make it a pleasant, low-key stop away from crowds.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring is the best season to visit, since meltwater keeps the stream full and the waterfall at its most impressive. Autumn, especially after heavy rain, can also offer a decent flow, while the drier summer months tend to leave the stream noticeably weaker. Since the area lies within a protected nature reserve, visitors should stick to the marked trails.
