About this place
Klečové louky is a nature reserve tucked into the Jizera Mountains, sitting between the peaks of Jizera and Smědavská hora within the cadastral territory of Hejnice in the Liberec district. Covering 7.5 hectares, the reserve was granted protected status in 1960, making it one of the longer-established protected sites in this part of the Czech Republic.
What exactly is protected here?
Despite its singular name, Klečové louky is actually a cluster of four separate peatbogs. The two largest are Velká klečová louka and Malá klečová louka, joined by the smaller Smrčková louka and Jelení louka. Each bog has developed its own microclimate and retains a distinct plant cover shaped by centuries of waterlogged, high-altitude conditions.
What kind of vegetation grows there?
The most visible feature across the reserve is dwarf pine (kosodřevina), forming dense, low thickets adapted to survive the harsh mountain climate at this elevation. Alongside it stands a waterlogged spruce forest, and scattered through both habitats are relict glacial flora — plant species left over from colder climatic periods, when such vegetation was far more widespread across Central Europe.
The bogs support numerous specially protected and endangered plant species tied to peatland habitats. Among them are marsh helleborine (a bog-dwelling orchid), several sedge species, black bog-rush, and sundew, an insectivorous plant typical of nutrient-poor peat environments. The presence of these species makes the reserve an important refuge for regional biodiversity.
Why does this small area matter beyond its borders?
Klečové louky carries a significance that extends well past its modest footprint. Two rivers — Bílá Desná and Bílá Smědá — originate within its bogs. The reserve also lies along the main European watershed, the line separating drainage toward the Baltic Sea from drainage toward the North Sea. Rain falling on one side of the reserve eventually reaches an entirely different sea than rain falling on the other side, a quiet but striking geographical detail that sets this small mountain area apart.
Who manages the reserve?
The site falls under the care of the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic (AOPK ČR), specifically its Jizerské hory Protected Landscape Area administration. This body is responsible for maintaining the peatland habitats and monitoring the populations of the protected plant species found there.
