Tichá říčka

Janov nad Nisou, Czechia

About this place

Tichá říčka is a small nature monument in the Jizera Mountains (Jizerské hory), located within the cadastral territory of the village of Janov nad Nisou, in the local part known as Hrabětice, in the Jablonec nad Nisou district of the Czech Republic. The site lies within the second zone of the Jizerské hory Protected Landscape Area and covers 3.97 hectares; together with its 50-metre-wide buffer zone, the total protected area reaches about 7 hectares. The nature monument was declared on 15 January 2008 by the Jizerské hory Protected Landscape Area Administration, with the regulation taking effect on 1 February 2008.

Why was this site protected?

The monument was established to preserve the surviving remnants of peatlands and peaty, wet meadows that have persisted in the valley of the Tichá říčka stream despite decades of human pressure on the surrounding landscape. These fragile wetland habitats are the main reason for the site's ecological value, sheltering several legally protected plant and animal species.

What species can be found here?

Among the plants, the most notable are orchids, including the military orchid (Orchis militaris) and the common spotted orchid (Dactylorhiza fuchsii), alongside the round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia), an insectivorous plant typical of peat bogs, and mountain arnica. The fauna is represented mainly by bird species associated with wetlands and by amphibians, for which the preserved marshy ground offers breeding and feeding grounds.

Are there hiking trails through the reserve?

No — there are no marked hiking trails within Tichá říčka. The site is managed strictly for conservation purposes rather than for tourist traffic. Even so, it remains easy to reach: a large parking lot and a bus stop are located nearby, allowing visitors to get close to the area without difficulty, even though the reserve itself can only really be viewed from its edges.

What is worth knowing about the stream itself?

The reserve takes its name from the Tichá říčka, a small stream running through this part of the Jizera Mountains. In recent years, restoration works have been carried out to return the stream to a more natural, meandering course — earlier hydrological interventions in the region, including drainage and channel regulation, had degraded the wetland habitats that the reserve now aims to protect and restore.

How does the reserve fit into the wider Jizera Mountains landscape?

Tichá říčka is one of many small but ecologically important protected sites scattered across the Jizera Mountains, a range known for its upland peat bogs, spruce forests, and numerous minor watercourses. Although the reserve itself is modest in size, its significance goes beyond its area — it serves as a refuge for species that have become locally rare after long-term pressure on wetland habitats throughout the region.
