Vidova gora

Vidova Gora is the highest peak on the island of Brač and, at 778 metres above sea level, the highest point on any island in the Adriatic. It rises directly above the town of Bol, and its name refers to Saint Vitus, sometimes translated as Mount St. Vitus. For visitors staying in Bol, it's the obvious spot for a sweeping panorama over the central Adriatic.

How do you get to Vidova Gora?

A winding paved road climbs to the summit, accessible by car or scooter from either the Bol side or from Nerežišća on the other side of the island. The road is narrow with many hairpin turns, so drive carefully, especially in the busy summer months. Hikers can also follow a marked trail leading straight up from Bol, which typically takes 1.5–2.5 hours depending on fitness level and can be demanding in hot weather. Some visitors tackle it by mountain bike, though the climb is one of the toughest on the island. There's a car park near the top, followed by a short walk of a few hundred metres to the actual viewpoint.

When is the best time to visit?

Early morning or the hours before sunset give the best light and usually clearer air than midday. In July and August the summit gets crowded, particularly around sunset, so arrive with time to spare. Spring and early autumn offer more comfortable temperatures for the hike up and fewer cars on the road. The road generally stays open in winter, but it's worth checking conditions first, since strong winds (the bura) can make the exposed summit uncomfortable.

How much time should you plan?

A visit to the viewpoint itself takes 30–45 minutes, but if you're hiking up from Bol and back down the same way, plan for half a day. Those arriving by car can combine Vidova Gora with a trip into the island's interior, including the villages of Nerežišća and Škrip.
