About this place
Velký Klín is a 1,178 m peak in the Hrubý Jeseník range (High Ash Mountains), part of the Eastern Sudetes in the northeastern Czech Republic, within the municipality of Bělá pod Pradědem. It sits roughly 6.5 km northwest of Praděd, the highest summit of the Jeseníky mountains. The mountain covers an area of about 4.1 km², and its slopes have an average gradient of around 16 degrees — a relatively gentle profile that still forms a distinctive landmark above the valley of the Bělá river.
What does the summit look like, and is there a view?
The top of Velký Klín is entirely wooded, so the highest point itself offers no wide panorama. The geodetic marker sits at a crossing of forestry tracks and, according to local surveys, may not exactly coincide with the true high point, which reportedly lies a short distance away in the forest. Views open up only around the edges of the summit area: to the east, where the tree cover thins out or has been partly cleared, hikers can look across toward the Praděd and Medvědská highlands. A little below the top, on the southwestern side, a clearing offers further glimpses of the surrounding hills.
The mountain's name most likely comes from its shape — the massif juts out wedge-like ("klín" means "wedge" in Czech) from the main Jeseníky ridge toward the Bělá valley, forming a narrow, pointed spur of terrain.
What natural features are worth knowing about nearby?
On the northern slope of Velký Klín, near a subsidiary point called Jeřáb (1,077 m), a band of rock outcrops stretches for more than 300 meters, with individual formations reaching several meters in height in places. It's one of the more striking geological features in this part of the range, standing out against the otherwise gentle, forested slopes.
It's worth noting that a similarly named peak, Velký Klínovec (about 1,166–1,167 m), lies a few kilometers away in the municipality of Loučná nad Desnou. The two are easy to confuse because of their near-identical names, but they are separate mountains in different locations with different elevations.
How do you get to the top?
Velký Klín is fairly accessible: a forestry track leads up from a small saddle near the Velkoklínská chata (a mountain cottage). The route doesn't require technical mountaineering skills and suits a relaxed few-hour walk through the forest, often combined with a visit to the nearby Červenohorské sedlo pass or neighboring summits in the range such as Výrovka or Malý Klín.
