Veliki Kozjak

Veliki Kozjak is a peak in the Velebit mountain range, rising above the coastal village of Stinica in Lika-Senj County, Croatia. Standing at 1,629 m above sea level, it sits right on the border between Northern and Middle Velebit, within the Velebit Nature Park. It's considered one of the most recognizable and photogenic summits in the entire range – a cluster of white limestone crags stretching from northwest to southeast, standing out sharply against the surrounding beech forest.

How do you get to Veliki Kozjak?

Most visitors start from the coast near Stinica, from where a road leads inland into the Velebit massif. The most common approaches begin from the Veliki Lubenovac area and from the Alan mountain lodge (1,340 m), where a demanding trail climbs over the peak of Obli Kuk (1,515 m) before reaching the summit of Veliki Kozjak. The ascent is technically challenging and rocky in places, so solid fitness and proper trekking footwear are strongly recommended. The limestone walls of the peak itself are also a well-known destination for climbers, with dozens of routes covering a wide range of difficulty levels.

What will you see at the top?

The summit offers one of the widest panoramas in all of Velebit – looking inland, hikers can see nearly the entire range stretching from north to southeast. The white, jagged rock formations, cut through by ridges and depressions, are typical of Velebit's high-mountain landscape and contrast sharply with the coastline of the Velebit Channel and the island of Rab visible in the distance. Lower down, the slopes are covered by dense beech forest, home to numerous bird species and mountain mammals.

Stinica itself, at the foot of the massif, is a small coastal settlement stretched along two bays, best known today as the departure point for the ferry to Rab (its 150-metre pier handles regular crossings). The village stands on the remains of the ancient town of Ortopla, destroyed in the 13th century – traces of a medieval fortress and old building foundations can still be found there.

When is the best time to visit?

The best season for hiking Veliki Kozjak runs from April to October, when the trails are clear of snow and easily passable. Spring and autumn bring milder temperatures near the summit than summer, when strong sun and a lack of shade on the rocky sections can make the climb tiring. In winter, the route requires high-mountain experience and proper equipment due to ice and snow cover.
