Goljak

Goljak is a peak in the Velebit mountain range, in Lika-Senj County, rising inland east of the coastal village of Stinica. It reaches an elevation of roughly 1605 metres, making it one of the many lesser-known summits along Croatia's longest mountain chain, part of the Dinaric Alps.

The peak sits at coordinates 44.724444, 15.013333, behind Stinica, on the inland side of the coast. It neighbours another summit, Veliki Golić, and together the two form a natural scenic ridge in the central section of Velebit.

How do you get to the top?

The usual starting point is the road leading to Štirovača, a mountain valley known for its pastures and mountain hut. From there, a track branches off toward Veliki Lubenovac, and a hiking trail continues first to Veliki Golić and then on to Goljak. A popular option is the circular route Alan – Veliki Golić – Goljak, which lets you return by a different path than you came. The trail is not technically demanding — most of it crosses open, grassy plateaus with no steep climbing sections.

From Goljak, the view opens onto neighbouring Velebit peaks — Veliki Kozjak, Kita and Bilenski Padež — and, on a clear day, further stretches of the massif. The route passes through landscape typical of central Velebit: limestone rock interspersed with green grassland, all within the Velebit Nature Park that covers the entire range.

When is the best time to visit?

Late spring through early autumn (May to October) is the best window for hiking Goljak, when trails are dry and passable and the pastures are green. In winter and early spring, snow can linger on the higher parts of Velebit and weather can change quickly, so it's worth planning the trip with extra time and a reliable forecast.
