About this place
Veli Vrh is a hill near Batomalj on the island of Krk, and one of the more popular hiking and biking destinations in the island's interior.
Where is Veli Vrh?
The peak rises to 541.5 m above sea level on a karst plateau in the south-eastern part of Krk, right next to Obzova (568–569 m), the island's highest point. Veli Vrh is also one of the reference points of the Croatian geodetic network, meaning it has long served surveyors as a fixed benchmark for mapping the terrain.
How do you get to the top?
The most popular route is a loop starting in Treskavac, climbing over Veli Vrh to Obzova and back — the whole circuit takes about 1.5 hours and is considered the easiest way to reach the island's summit. A separate route starts from Batomalj itself: roughly 12 km of macadam track along a river, followed by a paved road leading to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Gorička, one of the oldest Marian shrines in Croatia. The area also draws mountain bikers, though some stretches near the peak are technical and rated as difficult.
What will you see along the way?
The route crosses pastures and the typical rocky, karst terrain of Krk's interior, well away from the crowded coastline. From the ridge of Veli Vrh and neighbouring Obzova, views open up across the Kvarner islands and the Bay of Rijeka — one of the main reasons this stretch keeps showing up in island hiking guides.
When is the best time to visit?
Krk's interior is rocky and largely shadeless, so spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for hiking. In summer, start early in the morning and carry enough water — there are no refill points along the way.
Who is this route for?
The Veli Vrh–Obzova climb suits hikers with moderate experience who are comfortable on uneven, rocky ground. For mountain bikers, the section is more demanding and generally classed as a harder trail.
