Trbušnjak

Trbušnjak is a 62-metre hill rising directly above the town centre of Senj, Croatia. Its summit is crowned by Nehaj Fortress, the town's most recognisable landmark, which is why visitors usually treat the hill and the fortress as a single destination.

How do you get to the hill?

Trbušnjak sits right next to Senj's old town, so no car is needed to reach it. A signposted footpath leads up from the historic centre and gets you to the top in around fifteen minutes. The climb is steep but short, manageable for most visitors, including families with children. Sturdy shoes are a good idea, since the surface is rocky and uneven in places. Drivers will find parking available at the foot of the hill.

The main attraction is Nehaj Fortress, built in 1558 on the initiative of Ivan Lenković, commander of the Croatian Military Frontier, with support from Herbard VIII Auersperg and funding from Emperor Ferdinand I. It was raised as a defensive stronghold meant to hold back Ottoman advances, and its garrison sheltered the Uskoks, irregular border fighters known for daring raids against Ottoman forces. The fortress stands 18 metres high and 23 metres wide, ringed by walls between 2 and 3.3 metres thick that taper toward the top and end in crenellations with five corner towers. Today the site is managed by the Senj Town Museum and houses an exhibition dedicated to the history of the Uskoks and the wider region.

The hilltop itself doubles as a viewpoint. From up here you get a sweeping panorama of the Croatian coast and the islands of Rab, Goli, Prvić, Cres and Krk, and on a clear day the mountain ranges of Gorski Kotar, Učka and Velebit come into view as well.

When is the best time to visit?

Early morning or late afternoon are the best times to climb Trbušnjak, when the sun is gentler and the light flatters both the fortress and the sea views. Senj is known for the bura, a strong and gusty local wind that blows regularly even in summer, so it's worth bringing something windproof to the summit even on hot days. Every year the fortress hosts a medieval culture festival with historical re-enactments, which can be a good reason for history lovers to time their visit accordingly.
