Hlam

Hlam is a hill rising above Vrbnik, on the eastern coast of the island of Krk, in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County of Croatia. Strictly speaking, it's two neighbouring summits — Mali Hlam (446 m) and Veliki Hlam (482 m), the highest point in the municipality of Vrbnik. For hikers exploring eastern Krk, it's one of the most rewarding short trips on the island: a manageable climb followed by one of the best panoramas in the area.

How do you get to Hlam?

The easiest starting point is the centre of Vrbnik itself — a picturesque clifftop town famous for its Glagolitic heritage and the local Žlahtina wine. From there, a marked route (Krk Outdoor trail 186, "Beneath Mali Hlam") leads up towards the hill and forms part of the longer "Vrbnik's Hiking Round Trip." The full loop covers roughly 8 km and takes about 3 hours round trip from the town centre. The path crosses the rocky plateau of the island's eastern side, skirts vineyards and cultivated fields, then climbs gradually toward the base of the hill. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended — the ground is stony and uneven, typical of Krk's karst terrain.

The trail is accessible nearly year-round, though the rocky surface can get slippery after rain.
