About this place
Tržan Castle in Modruš is a ruined medieval fortress standing above the village of Modruš in the northern part of the historical Lika region in central Croatia. It lies in Josipdol Municipality, in the south of Karlovac County. For anyone who likes quiet, off-the-beaten-path historic sites, it is one of the more atmospheric stops in the Croatian interior.
Where is Tržan Castle?
The ruins crown a steep hill about 670 metres above sea level on the eastern slopes of the Velika Kapela mountains. The location was chosen for a reason: the fortress watched over an old route linking the Adriatic coast with the Pannonian Basin. Whoever held this passage influenced trade and troop movements between the sea and the continental interior. From the hilltop you get wide views over Modruš and the surrounding highlands.
What is the history of the castle?
The origins of the fortress are not precisely known. Some sources place it in the early Middle Ages, and a stronghold may have stood here by the early 13th century. The story is firmer once the Frankopan family enters it. Tradition holds that in 1193 King Béla III granted the Modruš estate to Prince Bartol II of Krk, ancestor of the later Frankopans. The family made Tržan one of its main seats, strengthened its defences and walled the market settlement below the hill.
Modruš became an important political and cultural centre of the region, and the surrounding territory was known as Modruš County. It was here in 1486 that the Modruš Urbar was written, a well-known early legal document in the Croatian language, valued by historians of law and of the language.
Why did the castle decline?
The region lay in the path of Ottoman raids. On the eve of the Battle of Krbava Field in 1493, the Frankopans failed to prevent Modruš from being looted and burned. Over the following decades the settlement lost importance, and the fortress took on a military role in the border defence system. In time the Frankopans shifted their interests elsewhere, and the castle was left to decay into the ruin seen today.
Other names
Tourism writing sometimes calls the castle Širingrad or Trojangrad, names tied to local legends about the fortress's distant past.
What will you see on site?
Today Tržan is a romantic, partly overgrown ruin. Fragments of defensive walls and the outline of the old complex survive on the summit. It is not a restored castle with ticket booths and guides, but a place where the passage of centuries is easy to feel. It fits well into a trip through Lika and Karlovac County that combines mountain scenery with medieval Croatian history.
