Torre del Portal de Riudoms

Torre del Portal de Riudoms is a medieval defensive tower in Vila-seca, a town in the Tarragonès region of Catalonia, close to Tarragona and the Costa Daurada coastline. It is one of the last surviving pieces of the town walls that once enclosed Vila-seca's historic centre.

Why does the tower carry the name of another town?

The name can be confusing, since Riudoms is actually a separate town a few kilometres away — this is not a case of the tower standing in the wrong place. Torre del Portal de Riudoms takes its name from the town gate it once flanked, which led out of Vila-seca toward Mas Calvó and on to Riudoms. In Catalan walled towns, gates and their guard towers were commonly named after the direction of the road running through them, which explains why a monument located firmly within Vila-seca bears the name of another municipality.

What role did it play in the town's defences?

The tower was built around 1504 as part of the fortifications encircling Vila-seca. The Portal de Riudoms was one of the gates giving access out of the walled town, and like most gates of its kind, it was flanked by two towers, since a single unprotected opening would have undermined the whole defensive line. One of these towers measured roughly 4.5 by 4.3 metres at its base and was built using rubble masonry, with the corners reinforced by ashlar — precisely cut stone blocks that gave extra strength at the structure's most vulnerable points.

The Portal de Riudoms stood opposite another town gate, the Portal de Sant Antoni, which shows that Vila-seca's walls were organised around several entrances placed at key points around the settlement.

The tower's fortunes changed as the walls lost their military relevance. Starting in 1675, the local jurats — the town's governing council — began selling off the individual towers to private owners. Once in private hands, many of these towers lost their original defensive purpose and were converted for residential or practical use, a pattern common across Catalan towns as fortifications became obsolete and their stone and central location took on new value.

What survives today?

A section of the Torre del Portal de Riudoms has been preserved — a fragment of the gate that once opened the road toward Riudoms. It is a modest but genuine relic of medieval military architecture, listed as a cultural property within Vila-seca's heritage register. It makes a good starting point for a short walk tracing the line of the old town walls, alongside the nearby Torre d'en Dolça and the remains of the Portal de Sant Antoni, together giving a sense of what the fortified town looked like five centuries ago.
